Are we doing enough to leverage digital platforms to create a more just and equitable society?

Leveraging African Digital Platforms for Social Change

Having spent nine years working in African media from leading digital marketing campaigns to spearheading social impact initiatives, I have taken a front row seat in witnessing the rapid transformation Africa’s media landscape is undergoing, driven by the proliferation of digital technologies.

There is so much potential for digital platforms to drive social change and amplify African voices. As I do a lot of work within this space, I want to explore the future of African media and discuss how leveraging digital platforms can create a more inclusive and equitable society in this article.

The proliferation of mobile devices, affordable internet access, and powerful social media platforms has democratized content creation and distribution. This shift has empowered individuals and organizations to produce and share content with a global audience, challenging traditional media monopolies and giving voice to marginalized communities.

Recent trends such as the rise of short-form video platforms like TikTok and Reels, the increasing popularity of podcasts, and the growing influence of influencers are reshaping the way Africans consume and engage with media. These developments offer new opportunities for African media to connect with audiences, tell compelling stories, and drive social change.

While undoubtedly, there is room from expansion and growth stifled by infrastructural challenges, Africa has made significant strides in digital media adoption. For your consideration, Africa had a higher mobile phone penetration rate (95%) in 2023 (according to GSMA) than the global average (71%), with Africa representing 8.4% of the global social media user base. This indicates a strong potential for digital media growth however, there is a lot of room left for expansion and development for Digital Media production.

African Digital Platforms + Social Advocacy = ?

Focusing on what we have working for us, African Digital platforms have the unprecedented edge for higher community engagement and interaction. Social media, in particular, has become a powerful tool for mobilising communities, raising awareness of social issues, and creating dialogue. This presents a marvellous opportunity to use African media as a key tool to:

  • Give a platform to individuals and communities who have been underrepresented across Africa.

  • Encourage citizens to participate in democratic processes and hold their governments accountable. We saw this very actively during the Nigerian 2023 Presidential Election.

  • Facilitate conversations that encourage diverse perspectives and different cultures.

  • Educate the public about pressing challenges such as poverty, inequality, and climate change.

Here are some incredible platforms/campaigns that leverage the power of media for good.

  • Mzalendo: Kenya's Digital Parliament: Mzalendo is considered a digital watchdog for Kenyan politics. This is a Kenyan organization that uses digital platforms to track + analyze parliamentary debates and makes this information accessible to the public, thus keeping the government more transparent and accountable through digital media.

  • #EndSARS: This campaign is such a powerful example of how digital platforms can be used to drive social change. This movement called for the disbandment of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) and quickly gained momentum on social media. The #EndSARS campaign showed the potential of digital platforms to amplify marginalized voices and how technology can be used to challenge injustice and demand accountability from governments.

  • Her Money, Her Power Campaign: I am very proud to be a part of this campaign - a collaboration between The She Tank and BellaNaija, which is sparking a national dialogue about Women's Economic Power in Nigeria. The goal is to use media and entertainment by leveraging the reach of BBNaija (Africa’s most watched TV show) and other digital platforms to challenge harmful stereotypes and promote gender equality.

Challenges, Opportunities and What’s Next

While digital platforms offer immense potential, they also present challenges. Misinformation, online harassment, and digital divides must be addressed to ensure that these platforms are used responsibly and equitably.

With a lot of underserved groups and societal issues in Africa, media organisations, government and civil societies can work together to overcome these challenges for greater good, while creating a more inclusive, equitable, and informed society. It is time for African media to embrace the future and leverage digital technologies to create a better world for all.

As leaders in the industry, it is our responsibility to embrace innovation, promote ethical journalism, and use our platforms to drive positive change.
